Anti-Nuke Doctor in Tamil Nadu Threatened with ‘Police Encounter’!

To: All the Democratically Concerned People of Tamil Nadu, India and the World

Respected Friend, Madem/Sir:

Sub: False Charges filed on me to curtail my professional and democratic duty to warn the people I am serving about the ill effects of the nuclear radiation around the Kalpakkam Nuclear Power Plant

I am a medical doctor practicing in Sadras village near the Kalpakkam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu, India, since 1989. I was a gold medalist during my undergraduate years at Madurai Medical College, but chose not to pursue higher education because I felt I should work among the poor masses in the villages. I chose Sadras as the place for my practice since I had many friends at Kalpakkam, who happened to work in the Kalpaakam Nuclear Power Plant.

From 1989 to 2000, my professional work was focused principally on serving the Dalit and the Fisher folks. My interests were in Primary Heath Care and I had devised many innovative cost efficient methods to treat the most prevalent diseases among the masses. I had written profusely about these methods in many journals and have published books highlighting these. My work was recognised by the local and national media and they had interviewed me many a times with regard to this. The noted magazine “Outlook” had published an exclusive article about me on 21 June 2004. I was even fondly nicknamed as “One Rupee Doctor” by many magazines that had interview me. I had started a small health awareness movement called Makkal Nala Vazhvu Pani Iyakkam (Forum for People’s Good Life) and had opened a clinic at Vayalur exclusively for this purpose among its Dalit populace. Impressed by my work, former Justice of the Supreme Court Shri.D.K.Basu came unannounced to grace this occasion. (1)

Korean Civil Society protests POSCO project

Korean Civil Right Organizations’ Announcement to the Indian Government and Posco for the trial of forced land acquisition at the Orissa State Steelwork site

Our concerns have now become a reality. The Orissa State Government of India announced that the land acquisition process for the Posco project will be continued from the 18th of May. Posco is now at the center of the conflict over resource development, which is raising serious social issues in India. Not only has the Indian Government expressed concern over the Posco project, but international societies, including Amnesty International, have also expressed their concerns regarding the Posco Project. Posco and the Korean government seem to be the only ones oblivious to the seriousness of the situation.

From the beginning, the Posco Orissa Project was embroiled in controversy by threatening tribal rights and opening up the possibility of environmental violence. Since 2010, both the Saxena and Meena Gupta Committees have suggested to Posco to delay development in the area since the residents of relevant areas needed to be protected by the Forest Rights Act. Additionally, there appeared to be several problems, including an agreements gathering process in which the Posco project has seriously been suspected of fabricating its legal justification for the project.

Thousands of residents have protested for the last six years against Posco and the government to protect their livelihood from the project without due process. Furthermore, more than 100 injuries occured on May 15th 2011 due to the blind firing of rubber bullets by police forces during a cruel dispersement of protesters. After announcing the reports of the Government Investigation Committee last year, residents expected the project to be halted.

CBI harassment of Jharkhand human rights activist

To,

The Hon’ble Union Minister,

Ministry of Home Affairs,

North Block, Central Secretariat,

New Delhi – 110001.

Re: inquiry against me by the Ministry of Home Affairs through the CBI.

Dear Sir,

Greetings!

With due respect, I would like to bring your attention in a case of inquiry against me, which has been carried out by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), New Delhi through the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Ministry had done the similar inquiry last year and I had given them all the required information despite that the same inquiry has been repeated to know whether I’m involved in any kind of anti-national activity and my association with the anti-national elements.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has initiated second round inquiry against me. An officer of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Mr. Nirmal Kumar Birua visited my resident in the afternoon at 3:15 PM on June 23, 2011 and asked me about the activities I’m involved with, the source of my income, my association with the organizations and mass movements, my work for Human Right, publications, reports, articles and so on. He also recorded about my family background including the background of my parents, brother and sisters, the present status of my family members and about my present residence and present status.

He told me that the Jharkhand Unit of the MHA has to send a bulletin in every evening and the Delhi office has been consistently asking to submit a report regarding my involvement in anti-National activities and association with anti-National elements. However, when I checked it I was shocked to know that there is no such unite of the MHA exists in Ranchi but the MHA does all kinds of inquiry in the state either through the Intelligence Bureau (IB) or the CBI. In fact, I have put everything in the public domain and I’m always available in Ranchi the capital city of Jharkhand and also appear in the media (print and electronic) very often. I have been raising the issues of human rights and social justice and the allegations of my involvement in anti-national activities and my association with the anti-national elements are baseless.

Leader of workers movement in Gorakhur Tapish Maindola has been arrested and taken to an undiclosed locaton by the police today this afternoon. about 500 workers have also been detained and are being held by the police near the Gorakhnath temple. The workers were taking out a peaceful demonstration in support of their demands to end the lockout in two factories, reinstate 18 of their dismissed workers and action in the firing incident which injured 19 workers on 18 May.

All the 500 workers along with the 5 hunger stikers have tied themselves with long ropes and sitting on the road where they were
stopped by a heavy police force ed by the DIG range. Tapish Maindola was arrested from another place – he was not with the
procession at the time. The police has taken him to an unknown place and it is feared that he can be harmed. It is known that some police and administrative officers were threatening the workers leaders with ”dire consequences”. They were particularly targeting Tapish, Pramod Kumar and Prashant and branding them as “terrorists-maoists.”

We appeal to all to immediately call officials in Gorakhpur and Lucknow to stop this repression immediately.

You Never Cease to Smile

badri raina

First  they  poisoned  the  air,

Then  set  little  man  against  little  man,

Armed with  ignorance  and hate.

The  arrows  yielded   to  the  bullets,

The bullets   to  banshee  yells

For  your  blood.

The  Gentleman  on  the  podium said

“ah,  this man  may  always  smile,

Never  raise   his   hand or  his voice,

But  he  reads,  he  thinks,  he  stays

His ground  among  the  hoi  polloi,

He swindles  them  with  care  and  potion;

Immune to  calumny  and  national  interest;

Such  men  are dangerous,

And must be put away  forever.”

He  mumbled  “you  do  your work,

I  do  mine;  you  despoil  the  earth

Through and  through,

I  use  the  pickaxe and  plough

Of  perseverance, faith, and love

The  despoilt  earth  to renew.”

Those  untutored  words  reached

The  gods  that sit  above,

The  iron walls  melted,  and  out

Came  this intractable  man  again.

Many   millions  around the  world

Wondered,  took  heart,  sang,

“when  Binayak  goes  marching in,

We are of his  company.”

Showering  jasmine petals, the  goddess

Of  Justice  admonished thus:

“O little  ones,  you  lose heart too soon;

Remember, when the thunderbolts are  hurled,

And  the mighty  trees fall,

It is the grass  under your feet

That still stands  tall.”

Binayak  smiled,  set  forth  without fuss,

To  medicine  the  next  of  us

Without  food, or flesh,  light in  the eyes

Money  in  the  bank,  roof  over  the  head,

Reason to  be  alive;  his  simple call

To  bring the  festering  sore  of  hopelessness

Back  to  some   healthy  red.

Such  ones are indeed dangerous; they

Work  on   the side of life,

They  spurn  those  that  kill,

Being  the  living-dead.
