3july: Discussion of State ‘branding’ of people
Dear Friends,
Journalist/filmmaker Satya Sivaraman who has been active with the `Free Binayak Sen Campaign’ is in Bangalore. Some of us thought of using the opportunity to discuss various forms of `branding’ by the institutions of State on activists and ordinary people. It appears that we are going through a phase where more and more people are branded as naxalites, terrorists on false charges resulting in serious personal damages. The most recent such exercise is the `branding’ of Leo Saldhana as a sandalwood smuggler by the forest department. We feel that it is time to discuss this issue and evolve effective strategies to counter State `branding’ of activists.
We therefore invite you to participate in a meeting on this issue.
Venue: SCM House, Mission Road Bangalore.
Time: 5.30 pm
Date: July 3, 2008
Satya Sivaraman, Prof. Hassan Mansoor, Jagdish and Leo Saldhana will initiate the discussion.
In solidarity,
